The Many Languages of Meow

Contrary to popular belief, cats don’t meow at each other much. They save that special vocal energy for you. Because nothing says “I own you” like a tiny creature yelling in your face for food at 5 a.m. Here are a few common translations: Short meow: “Hi.” Or “I noticed you opened a can — is it for me?” Long meow: “HELLO I’M DYING OF STARVATION (even though you fed me ten minutes ago).” Multiple meows: “I’m walking and talking now because you clearly didn’t listen the first time.” Chirps and trills: “Bird!! Bug!! Look, I’m excited and I need backup!” Silent meow: The dramatic Oscar-winning performance. “I’m so hungry, I can’t even make sound anymore.”
